Many times when we perform a CDL physical in Miami, a frequently asked question we hear over and over again is “what is the best way to improve your overall health quickly?”
It’s not surprising this is such a concern for commercial drivers. Since CDL Physical medical certification is required in order to maintain the ability to work, commercial drivers must be even more conscientious and aware regarding their health. Therefore, achieving the best possible overall health state is vital.
Sleeps Correlation To Your Health & Passing Your CDL Physical Exam
What may surprise you, however, is that perhaps one of the most overlooked ways to quickly improve health – increasing your likelihood of passing the CDL physical exam and getting your DOT medical certification – is to simply get enough sleep.
Of course, we have long known sleep is important for many reasons. It makes us think clearer, keeps our emotions in check, improves reaction time and more. But there are even greater, more important, benefits of sleep to health.
Unfortunately, however, many people view sleep as a luxury instead of a necessity. When people are overworked and are pressed for time, sleep is usually the first thing to suffer. This is where it all can go bad. Sleep is what heals and repairs our heart and blood vessels, allowing our body to better defend itself from disease and other illness, as well as heal when it’s injured. Likewise, sleep deficiency can lead to many health issues that many people don’t notice until problems arise in a medical exam such as the DOT physical.
Health Risk of Too Little Sleep
The health risks of too little sleep on a routine and/or repeated basis include:
- Obesity:People who get six hours of sleep or less are more likely to be overweight.
- Risk of Heart Disease:Those who sleep five hours or less are more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes.
- Heart Disease & High Blood Pressure:A recent study showed that just moderately reduced sleep could be correlated to a greater risk of artery calcification.
- A Weak Immune System: As we discussed above, the body heals and restores during sleep. Shortchanging this process reduces the body’s ability to fight illness and disease.
Other health risks of sleep deprivation include:
- Kidney Disease
- Premature Aging
The recommended amount of sleep can vary from person to person but experts agree most people need approximately 8 hours. Even shortchanging this time by just a few hours can have negative consequences.
If you are a commercial driver, this is doubly important for you since your health greatly impacts your ability to earn a living due to the CDL physical exam and DOT medical certification requirements. At least this is an area that can be somewhat easy to fix. The power lies completely with you. Get some sleep!
